Definitve Proof - Supplements Heal

No Money in Prevention

I have been recommending a wide variety of dietary supplements to my patients for the past 18 years. Needless to say, this is not the norm for physicians. The medical establishment as a whole is treatment driven rather the prevention driven. There is much more profit in treating illness and disease rather than preventing it. As a matter of fact, the healthcare industry, including the American Medical Association (AMA), medical schools, hospitals, research institutions and drug manufacturers, have made a concerted effort to obfuscate the truth about health supplements and their intrinsic value. What little legitimate research and data, detailing the benefits of supplementation, that actually reaches the general public is quickly dismissed by the medical community as being “unsubstantiated” or “preliminary.” Whenever I relate to a colleague a patient’s recovery from a chronic condition by simply adjusting their diet and prescribing the appropriate health supplements, I often become the recipient of an incredulous laugh or sarcastic comment. At best, I am summarily dismissed with any one of a number of explanations to contradict what I know to be empirical evidence of successful treatment. Supplements can neither treat nor prevent any serious illness or disease according to the vast majority of healthcare providers.

“Only highly trained medical professionals are able to successfully treat chronic illnesses.” This is the mantra of the traditional medical community. The most disturbing aspect of this attitude is that medical students receive little or no education regarding nutrition, dietary supplements or any alternative treatments. There is no curriculum that includes preventative medicine. Similarly, physicians do not augment their education with post-doctoral fellowships in nutrition or alternative treatment research. Additional education or training in this area is non-existent. Again, the primary motivating factor is not the patient’s health and well being, it is treatment. The healthcare system is reactive, not proactive, to such an extent that physicians do not recognize they are, in part, responsible for their patients’ poor health. Physicians wait for symptoms, diagnose the symptoms and then attempt to treat the condition. A more pragmatic and cost-effective approach would be to administer healthcare systemically and organically. Ignoring the importance of preventative medicine contributes to the astronomical cost of healthcare in this country, along with Medicaid/Medicare, frivolous lawsuits and unlimited tort awards. For all these reasons, the average person is woefully misinformed about the benefits that proper nutrition and quality health supplements offer.

Quantifiable Results

Proper nutrition and regular exercise is the cornerstone of any effective health maintenance program. Again, most people do not appreciate the tremendous impact their diet has on their overall health and longevity. There are countless illnesses and diseases that are directly attributable to vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies. It is crucial for you to learn about the nutrients contained in the foods you eat (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, etc.). The only way to accomplish this is to read. There is far too much data to impart to be sufficiently addressed in this article. The Internet is probably the best and easiest venue for obtaining this type of material.

For a nutritionally sound-eating plan, refer to my “Eating for Health, Happiness and Successful Weight Control” (http://www.healthproductsusa.net/free_diet_health.htm) or, for a more structured diet, consider WebMD’s weight loss program (”https://diet.webmd.com/webmddiet/default_main.aspx?referrer=1111_006_0000_0013&secure=1″), which I highly recommend.

Unfortunately, even the healthiest of diets will be somewhat nutritionally deficient due to processing, cooking, and mineral deficient soil. Many food-processing methods, such as pasteurization, destroy essential nutrients necessary for good health. Cooking food also removes many nutritional elements. For decades, our farming soil has been virtually devoid of the 74 minerals necessary to sustain life (see http://www.healthproductsusa.net/govreports_health.htm). Consequently, no matter how much healthful food we eat, without supplementation we are still “starving” for nutrients. Therefore, as part of a comprehensive health maintenance regimen, I recommend that all my patients take a high-quality multivitamin (ingredients will differ for men and women), an absorbable mineral complex (either colloidal or an above-sea coral mineral), CoEnzyme Q10, an omega EFA group, methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM), chondroitin, colostrum and an immune system support supplement (as such beta-1,3D glucan). It is important to note, however, supplements do not replace healthful food. Their function is exactly as their name, “dietary supplements.” Patients that have incorporated a varied, healthful diet coupled with a consistent supplementation program report notably fewer ailments, with the exception of pre-existing conditions.

For patients with pre-existing conditions or new patients with previously undiagnosed conditions, I will, in many cases, prescribe additional supplements based on:
dietary deficiency that may be causing the condition, case history, medical profile, symptomology and test results.
I consider pharmaceuticals a second tier modality and surgery and/or hospitalization a final option unless otherwise indicated. Connective tissue and bone ailments are most easily treated with supplements and have the most dramatic results. Vitamin K1, silica, chrondoitin, MSM, minerals, collagen and elastin are all elements that will facilitate connective tissue and bone (joint) ailment recovery. I could cite a litany of conditions that were markedly improved. Suffice to say, there have been very few patients, whether their condition(s) were minor or chronic, who did not realize at least some relief after taking the recommended supplements for an appropriate period of time. To their pleasant surprise, many patients also experience unexpected ancillary health improvements beyond that of the targeted condition.

Although I have not methodically tracked the recovery success rate, I feel confident in reporting that a significant percentage of my patients have responded well to a nutrition modality. To the extent that the use of more traditional modalities were not required.

Are the Health Supplements Safe

March 19, 2008 · Posted in Health Supplements · Comment

Health supplements are now a common addition to our diet and in many situations they are the only solution to our health problems. However the Internet is simply flooded by SPAM and pop-up advertisements promising a quick relief from various illnesses if only we take (put a name here) health diet supplement and they are treated more and more like some kind of wonder pills. On the other hand, the benefits and dangers of using them are more and more discussed among physicians. The use of various supplements in bodybuilding process and the dangers of abusing them do not help.

The point is that health supplement really do work, but not for everybody and certainly they’re not for every occasion.

Nutritional deficiencies

Basically dietary health supplements were originally developed to help people overcome their nutritional deficiencies. If, for any reason, an individual is unable to follow a balanced diet, health supplements help them to keep your organism intact. However in most cases when an individual eats healthy food (a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. For example), health supplements are no longer needed and taking them will have only little effect (and not always a positive one).

Bodybuilding/fitness

Another common reason of taking health supplements is bodybuilding. When we want more than to be fit, the normal diet is not enough and we need to take something more serious if we hope to keep up the unhealthily quick pace of the muscles grow. That’s where the health supplements come. However as they are often taken without any medical knowledge (and they need to be taken in large quantities if they are to have a visible effect), their final effects may no longer be positive.

Conclusion

In short, health supplements are OK, but only as long as people use them for the reasons they were made for - to fight nutritional deficiencies. Bodybuilding or the general need of feeling healthy are not good reasons for taking those pills (even herbal ones). Our body is a delicate mechanism and we shouldn’t tinker in it too much without a serious reason.

Help Prevent Premature Aging With Nutrition-Science

February 10, 2008 · Posted in Health Supplements · Comment

Aging occurs when the body’s cells die at faster rates than new cells are generated. People age prematurely because inadequate nutrition resulting from poor diet stimulates cellular destruction and increases the potential for obesity, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases.

With improper diet, the body produces vast quantities of highly reactive oxygen molecules, known as free radicals. Free radicals attack healthy cells and accelerate the aging process. This occurs especially when we eat high-fat foods, but also occurs when we are exposed to environmental pollutants, such as pesticides and ultraviolet radiation…or consume too many calories in the diet.

Simple Steps to Help Prevent Premature Aging:

1. Take a high-potency MULTIVITAMIN/MINERAL SUPPLEMENT DAILY… to provide valuable nutritional protection against free radicals and help eliminate toxins.

2. Eat Plenty of BERRIES . . . Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.as well as grapes and cherries all contain valuable phytonutrients called flavonoids, which have potent antioxidant activity that can fight heart disease. The naturally occurring Ellagic Acid from these berries, also promote excretion of carcinogenic chemicals.

3. Drink GREEN TEA . . . Green tea comes from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the same plant used to make black tea….but it has more of the potent antioxidants called polyphenols than black tea.

Green Tea helps protect the liver and fight cancer. One recent study examined Japanese women with breast cancer. Increased green tea consumption was associated with a decreased risk of lymph node metastasis. Researches also found that when women with breast cancer drank five cups of green tea a day, they were more likely to be in remission six months later.

Green tea also has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, fight tooth decay and aid in weight loss.

Drink two or more cups of green tea daily or take at least 1,500 mg daily of Green tea extract in capsule or tablet form.

4. Reduce Dairy Food Intake…No more than 3 - 4 servings of dairy per week.

Milk, cheese and other dairy foods contain Casein, one of the most common food allergens. It can deplete immune cells. Milk also contains xanthine oxidase, an enzyme that may increase plague buildup in the arteries.

Adults don’t need dairy to get adequate Calcium. Increase daily intake of Calcium-enriched foods, such as juice and soy, rice and almond milk. Broccoli, collard greens, sardines and canned salmon also are rich in Calcium.

5. Supplement with FISH OIL, PRIMROSE OIL AND FLAXSEED OIL . . . These oils contain essential fatty acids…fish oil is a source of eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA)…evening primrose oil is a source of GLA. These beneficial fatty acids are involved in proper functioning of the brain and immune system. They also reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer…and help relieve pain and inflammation.

Take 3,000 mg to 5,000 mg of fish oil and 1,000 mg of evening primrose oil daily. If you are on blood-thinning medications such as warfarin (Coumadin), check with your doctor first. Vegetarians can substitute Flaxseed oil for fish oil, if so desired.

6. Increase GARLIC Intake . . . Garlic contains allicin, a sulfur compound that builds immunity and prevents infections. It reduces risk of colon, esophageal and stomach cancers. One study of 41,000 American women found that one or more servings of garlic a week decreased colon cancer risk by 35%. It also lowers cholesterol and has valuable blood pressure-lowering effects.

One-half to one whole raw clove daily (cooking reduces its benefits), or an odor-free Garlic supplement with 4,000 micrograms (mcg) to 5,000 mcg of allicin.

7. Supplement with SPIRULINA 2,000 mg to 3,000 mg per day . . . Spirulina is a nutritive blue-green algae that grows in warm waters around the world including Africa, Central America and Hawaii. It has become a staple for knowledgeable health practitioners because it contains all the essential amino acids in a highly absorbable form and is a rich source of protein. It also contains carotenoids, fat-soluble pigments that act as antioxidants . . . gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid . . . chlorophyll, a pigment that has potent antioxidant and anti-cancer properties…and phytocyanins, which stimulate red blood cell production. Several studies have shown that spirulina improves immune system activity. Spirulina also has been shown to have antiviral effects and a mild cholesterol-reducing benefit.

Why I Hate Remedy Research

February 8, 2008 · Posted in Health Supplements · Comment

First, I must define Remedy Research: Remedy Research is that research that says carrot juice (or a vitamin or supplement, etc.) is good for your gout, hemorrhoids, heart, eyes, brain, etc., and that carrot juice (or a vitamin or supplement, etc.) is not good for your gout, hemorrhoids, heart, eyes, brain, etc.

Let’s take Vitamin E. My neighbor who suffers from heart disease takes 800 mg of vitamin E everyday. She says it makes her heart tissue pliable and really nice. Now 800 mg is way above the recommended dosage. She doesn’t care.

I use to take high dosages of vitamin E, but I don’t now. Why? Remedy Research said “Stop doing that!”

Here is a government report item on vitamin E: A 1994 review of 5,133 Finnish men and women aged 30-69 years also suggested that increased dietary intake of vitamin E was associated with decreased mortality (death) from heart disease. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamine.asp

Over 5 thousand Fins. Wow!

Here is another report on vitamin E: At a recent meeting of the American Heart Association (2004) researchers presented data that showed high levels of vitamin E may cause death. A statistical analysis combining data from studies involving 136,000 indicated that subjects receiving high doses of vitamin E had a 5% increase in death. The cause of death in these studies was not reported.
http://www.medicinalfoodnews.com/vol08/issue3/vitamin_e.htm

Maybe they got run over by a train.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Let me tell you a secret: Statistical research can be useful.

Let take the above. Have a zillion people take lots of vitamin E and another zillion take none. Come back in five years and see how many are still alive. Draw a conclusion.

What should the conclusion be?

Proper Conclusion: We checked the death rate of those who take lots of vitamin E with those who took none. We checked a zillion people so there is a high probability that our results are correct and that there is a difference in death rate. No conclusions can be drawn as to why more people died who use lots of vitamin E. No causes of death were determined.

The above is not statistician talk. I didn’t use it because you would not know what in all hell the conclusion was.

Now, how should the above statistical information be used?

First, the reasons for death must be determined.

If there is an increase in heart related deaths (or any other disease), it should be studied further.

What were the exact causes of heart disease deaths? Can they in anyway be related to vitamin E?

If they can, then what exactly is the property and mechanism by which vitamin E may kill you?

If you don’t have the answers to the above questions, then forget the statistics.

Start over!

Your only conclusion must be: That specific statistical test does not correlate with known science.

That goes for the Finnish test too but to a lesser degree because the Finnish test was related specifically to heart disease deaths. But that study also has to be verified by science. You have to know the mechanism by which vitamin E causes heart problems or prevents them.

We American spend billions of dollars on prescription and nonprescription medicines and health supplements. Some studies indicated that certain prescription drugs are harmful or useless. Some studies show that nonprescription health supplements are useful. Others show they are detrimental or useless. Some studies show that certain nonprescription supplements are superior to certain prescription drugs.

Things are so confusing that many seek the advice of quacks or naturalist. Unfortunately, most medical doctors know little about natural supplements that are not in their formulary.

Every year a lot of people swarm into Mexico for magical treatments. Mrs. King was one of these which resulted in the closing down of a number of medical clinics by the Mexican Government.

Americans are interested in natural remedies. It’s part of our culture. It’s up to science to determine what does what by what mechanism. Using statistics for the wrong purposes just confuses the heck out of everybody.
